As of the 2008 model year, the U.S. government and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) part of the effort to increase awareness of the need to maintain proper tire pressure rook steps has to make it easier for drivers to be aware of potentially unsafe low pressure in their tires.
WHY? A huge percentage of tire related accidents are caused by under inflated tires. These accidents cause deaths, injuries, missed work time, increase in insurance premiums, etc.
As of the 2008, all passenger cars and light trucks were mandated to include the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). In addition to the new requirements, the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers (AAM) has began a consumer safety and awareness campaign focusing on the importance of maintaining proper tire pressure for safety purposes.
However, 106 St Tire & Wheel wants to point out that maintaining proper tire pressure is not only safer but it increases gas mileage and saves money at the pump and our most precious resource, the environment..
TPMS is an automated system that monitors the air pressure in all of your vehicle's tires in a dashboard display. When air pressure in one or more tires drops 25% or more below the correct tire pressure the driver is alerted through a dashboard display.
Below is the universal sign for a TPMS alert:
