Too many people neglect their car’s maintenance until it’s too late which leads to increasing the costs of repairs and the dangers of driving. There are many dangers to that when it comes to tire wear as we have said over and over again. UNDER INFLATED TIRES is the number one cause of tire failure and causes up to 10,000 accidents a year of not more!
However, ignoring your braking system can lead to a disaster. Waiting increases brake repair costs and may find you with no brakes at all. Paying attention to some of the very noticeable signs of brake wear can keep you on top of maintenance, save you some money and keep you from hitting another car, a wall, a tree, or God forbid a pedestrian!
Let’s start with the most noticeable symptom of brake wear first. Your car's brakes need attention if there is a high pitched squeal when you come to a stop. Companies that manufacture brake pads include a small piece of metal called an “indicator” on the pad itself. When that small piece of metal wears down to the point where less than one quarter inch is left, your brakes will squeal as a warning to you to get attention usually within 30 days depending on how much longer you drive your car, whether you drive in stop and go traffic (like Flushing, UGH!) or depending on how hard you drive or far you go.
Sometimes, the “indicator” rusts and falls off, leaving no irritating noise to warn of brake wear so it’s a good idea to get your brakes checked if any “symptom” of brake wear is noticed. Here’s the symptoms:
1. squealing
2. not slowing or stopping fast enough
3. grinding noises when stopping
4. increase in distance it takes to stop
5. brake pedal goes down too far before car stops
6. your car "pulls" to the left or right when stopping
7. weak emergency brake
8. bad smell after coming to a hard stop
9. vibration in the steering wheel when stopping
10. not stopping
Be cautious here as the risks are obvious especially in view of something critical. Many low cost brake pads don’t have wear “indicator” at all. Therefore, it’s vital to pay special attention to the list above or have your brakes checked fairly often if it’s been years since they were replaced. The life expectancy of brakes is about 30,000 miles however and that’s a BIG HOWEVER, there are variables such as the way you drive. Stop and go traffic will wear out your brakes sooner. Riding the brake will wear them out faster as well. Stomping your brake will wear them out quickly. So, please, be diligent about maintenance especially when it pertains to safety issues for you, your family and other people.
