Get your Car Ready for Summer:
No.1 Check your tires
At any given time, four tires are keeping you from a wreck while driving. Even if you have a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), give them due caution. Check tread depth while watching for signs of wear, especially uneven wear. Make sure they all (including the spare) are at recommended cold pressures. Tires have a nasty habit of failing from improper inflation combined with extended driving on hot roads. Finally, make sure your brakes function properly. Once you’re through with your summer car checklist, you’ll be set for a better -- and safer -- season of driving
No.2 Change your oil and filter
It’s hard to fully appreciate how important it is to change your engine oil and oil filter at the prescribed intervals. If you don’t, you’ll soon have plenty of time to ponder this -- along the side of the road, probably miles from anywhere. Along with this no-brainer on your summer car checklist, check out your air filter, belts and lights. Unless, of course, you’d rather skip them too and have something to do when you’re stranded.
No.3 Check your coolant
Your car’s radiator juice is another item that isn’t just for winter driving, because the antifreeze is now acting as a coolant. Of course, this isn’t only something to be done on a summer car checklist, but throughout the year. Other than confirming the level is acceptable, check its potency. Testers are cheap and found at auto parts stores. If you need to top off your coolant, a 50/50 coolant/water mixture is generally the way to go. If your test and/or owner’s manual suggests it, change the coolant and check the hoses
No.4 Check your battery
Earlier in our summer car checklist, we were covering some points more about convenience. As you might have guessed by our last item, we’re getting into more critical territory, right where you’d expect a reminder to check your battery. Batteries don’t just die in the dead of winter. Summer strains them too -- even more so, according to the Car Care Council. Seasonal and higher operating temperatures allow a battery’s fluid to evaporate, leading to corrosion and diminished performance. Clean the battery’s top and posts, plus top off with distilled water if yours allows.
No.5 Change your wiper blades
As a preventative measure, six months is a good recommended cycle for windshield wiper blade replacement. Even if your climate and wiper usage are gentle, pay attention to your wipers’ performance and replace them as soon as it drops off. Besides, it has the opposite of the car-wash effect: change your wiper blades and it’ll be sunny for weeks.
No.6 Put your sun shade in the carEven by following the previous item on our summer car checklist, the car’s air conditioning can use a little help. This is a seemingly minor detail that makes a big difference: A sun shade for your windshield. When you’re parked in the sun, these keep the interior noticeably cooler and fold for easy storage. While you’re at it, keep sunscreen in the car for yourself. Even if you don’t share your girlfriend’s passion for liberally slathering SPF 2000, keep something realistic in the car and use it as needed.
No.7 Check your air conditioning & cabin air filter
It’s never a bad idea to periodically run your car’s air conditioner throughout the year, just to keep everything in working order. Depending on your car, it may run the system automatically for defrosting, regardless of temperature setting. Either way, don’t wait for the first 90°F day to realize your A/C is DOA. Give it a test at its coolest setting while driving.

No.10 Take out your winter mats, ice scraper & chains
Summer is short enough. Enjoy the season for all it is and represents; don’t carry dead-weight reminders of winter with you. Clear out your winter mats, ice scraper, tire chains and any other unnecessary seasonal gear as the first order of business on your summer car checklist. Until the snow flies again this fall, removing these products frees needed space and lightens the load.

French Host First All Electric Grand Prix
Automotive racing has a long history in many countries, but France was the first to hold a Grand Prix race. The small town of Pau hosted the event in 1901 on the short 1.7 mile course that runs through the town. The town is about 50km from the Spanish border and is known as a resort area set among beautiful rolling hills. It took them until 1933 to set up an annual Grand Prix race for the town, but ever since then its people have been enamored with racing.
This past weekend saw a change for this town and its racing heritage. Instead of roaring loud Formula 3 cars tearing up the race track, 12 drivers took electric race cars out for this new event. It must have been an odd sight considering that these petrol heads are used to the sounds associated with Formula racing and thrive upon the excitement, but this sleepy little French town was hardly even disturbed by the low hum emitted from these new race cars.

The nitrogen molecule is more stable and larger than that of oxygen; it takes 3 to 4 times longer for it to escape through porous rubber tires. Nitrogen fill increases safety, reduces tire wear, improves handling, minimizes blowouts and its environmentally friendly. Nitrogen-fill is not new. It’s been used by NASCAR, in airplane tires and NASA space shuttle tires for more than a decade.
We NY’ers know cars are a huge issue in our city and, let’s face it, we love our vehicles. There’s some good news, though. Not all car enthusiasts are thinking horse-power…some of us are thinking green.
Under-inflated tires are an enormous issue. It’s the number one cause of thousands of tire related accidents annually which result in many fatalities, scores of serious injuries, property damage, increased insurance premiums, etc.
Also, under-inflated tires cause gas mileage to plummet costing more at the pump which is especially significant during this recession and while prices of gas are spiraling. However, by utilizing nitrogen-fill gas savings can be 3-10% per tank of gas. And, more important, to those of us thinking green: saving gas = saving money = reducing emissions = a greener tomorrow.

Driving on under-inflated tires can cost you 3.75% in fuel economy but over-inflating tires can be dangerous. Over-inflation of tires reduces your grip on the road and could possibly cause an accident. Under-inflation can cause accidents, too, and cost you nearly 4% of your MPG. With gasoline at about $4.25 a gallon you would save about 15 cents a gallon. It doesn’t sound like much, and maybe it’s not, unless you drive a lot but if everyone did it across the world think about how much gas and emissions we could save. Also, times are tough…15 cents per gallon of gas adds up over the course of a year. Why give it to the big oil companies? You could treat yourself to a movie at the end of the month or maybe an extra day on vacation at the end of the year.
2. Turning Off the AC
Our electric bills at home soar when A/C goes on. Does the bottom fall out of your gas mileage when you do the same in your car? Auto testing at Consumer Reports proves that running the AC uses such a nominal amount more in gas. In the larger picture, in stressful times, it’s probably better to run the car A/C when you need to so you won’t be a victim of road rage or fading too early in the day because you’re exhausted from the heat. Remember last summer? UGH! Rolling down your windows can add drag and therefore ruin your gas mileage. For the very best gas mileage, run the fan and keep your windows rolled up.
3. Filling Up When It's Cold Outside Saves Gas
Because the tanks at gas stations are below ground, the gas you buy is always cooler than the air and therefore denser. There are no savings to be had by waiting until the weather’s cool.

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says bolt on gas saving devices and fuel additives are a complete waste of money.

Consumer Reports tests have shown that with today's computerized cars, clogged air filters don't actually reduce fuel economy. If you have an older car that does suck up a lot of gas in starting, turn the ignition off and take the hit. It’s the cost of driving in the modern world and on a fragile planet.
