106 St Tire & Wheel is offering tips to extend your car battery life:

Terminals:
Energy from your battery gets to your car engine through two wires. One is connected at the POSITIVE pole of your battery and the other at the NEGATIVE pole of your battery.

Cleaning the poles is simply part of everyday maintenance because corrosion is normal because if the corrosion prevents a good solid connection, you will probably experience some starting issues.

The battery terminals should be wire brushed every 3 months or so. Don’t tug on the wires! Just twist them gently. Adding some high temp grease can reduce the corrosion and will result in one less headache by eliminating that busy morning when your car won’t start!

Staying put too long:
if you aren’t going to be driving your car for longer than 2 weeks, disconnect your battery.

This prevents a gradual loss of charge. Simply remove the connector for the negative pole. You can't take the connector out of the car, so put it where it won't touch the terminal.

Drive long enough to charge your battery:
Short hops around the ‘hood aren’t long enough to charge your alternator. Your car must run, preferably on the highway, for at least 20 minutes.

Checking the water level:
Use distilled water to fill your battery and check the level every 2 to 4 months. You want the level to barely reach the bottom of the refill hole
